Mary Travers Dead At 72, Sent: Thu 9/17/09 9:14 AM    To: Frankfurt_HS_67-71@yahoogroups.com

MARY TRAVERS, part of the 1960s folk music trio PETER, PAUL and MARY, died WEDNESDAY in a CONNECTICUT hospital, after suffering from leukemia for several years. She was 72.
PETER, PAUL and MARY exposed much of the country to BOB DYLAN by helping to turn his "Blowin' in the Wind" into a national anthem. The group reunited several years ago to begin touring, and TRAVERS performed with them until a few months ago, even when she needed assistance on stage.
TRAVERS, along with bandmates PAUL STOOKEY and PETER YARROW, saw folk music both as an art and as an instrument for political and social change. "I'm not sure I want to be singing 'Leaving on a Jet Plane' when I'm 75," she said in one interview. "But I know I'll still be singing 'Blowin' in the Wind.'"

All the best, Chris Stimson,

I met PPM in Frankfurt in 64 (they were promoting their latest record and spent about 1/2 hr talking to the small group of American Teens that was there. I remember how gracious they all were and how tall she was. Except for "Puff", I throughly enjoyed all their songs.        - Frank "Skip" Holroyd

An interesting concept rock show The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus 1968.  Mick Jagger and the Stones were burned out from all the work running the show (and maybe too much pharmaceuticals), and their performance was somewhat overshadowed by The Who, so the show was maybe "shelved" at the time...???

"Check this out. Another youthful moment to remember. Once viewed it’s impossible for “me” to even consider hip hop or rap an art form. ENJOY   - Michael D."

The reverse was also true. I had bought a 45 of the Beach Boys "Little Deuce Coupe/Little Surfer Girl in the summer of '63. We travelled across country and the song was new in the Mid-west, had just reached New York when we got there, and was just reaching Germany when we arrived in Darmstadt. Things have changed!

Nothing from Nothing 74 by Billy Preston.  That song hit #1 in October 1974 Speaking about music, I still have a couple of tapes with BFBS Top 40 from mid '80s.

That was awesome !

I remember Some People (Cliff Richard) was number one for several weeks (here you will have to excuse me, folks... Different generation :) )

Enjoy !  - FF

Crocodile Rock  (79) was "We may never pass this way again" by Seals and Croft. But I really liked CSNY.  They had a great sound.  I really like "Southern Cross" and would sing it to myself when I lived in Ecuador and looked up in the night sky and saw the "Southern Cross."  Of course, Quito was much closer to the stars at 9600 feet above sea level.  John S.
